the watch for car enthusiasts

Software Used:

background

The field watch originated in its more modern purpose in the early 1900s as a watch for soldiers during the First World War. When these soldiers returned home at the conclusion of the war, watchmakers began advertising similar watches to men, ones with large, easy to read numbers, a wide face, durable, and simple, to keep up with the rugged lifestyles of men at the time.

the idea

As a car enthusiast, working under the hood of a vehicle is nothing foreign to me, but it becomes very clear that wearing any sort of watch or other wristwear becomes difficult within the tight spaces of the engine bay. The goal was to create a simple field watch for car enthusiasts that is not only sleek, easy to read, and dotted with automotive charm, but also practical enough to be worn even while working in the grimy and tight conditions of a car’s mechanical parts.

ideation

An exploration of different forms, inspried by the parts that give cars soul.

form development

Originally, concepts that more closely represented automotive parts were built in Solidworks.

Inspiration parts from left to right: engine block, wankel engine rotor, piston connecting rods, clutch plate and transmission gears

The concept inspired by the piston connecting rods was the direction choosen to develop due to its simplicity, yet ability to be more manipulated to add more details.

This development led to creating forms that involved multiple aspects of driving, such as the haxagonal shape of the case not only being inspired by a connecting rod, but also by stop signs and brake calipers, which go hand-in-hand with one another.
