the habit-changing storage solution for messy college students

the issue
College students suffer from a lack of dorm room storage space in many dorms across different universities because of most dorms being quite compact. As a result, it’s common for college students to simply toss their belongings around on whatever available surfaces there are. A lack of good, organized storage areas leads to unstructured organization or a complete lack of organization. So how might a system of storage be created for college students that doesn’t negate the habit of tossing belongings around while also encouraging better storage habits.

Made from injection molded plastic, Toss is a simple yet playful design. The center of Toss is a wide but shallow bowl that allows for some tossing of belongings, but due to its shallowness, it doesn’t hold many belongings. It is misleading in its size to give users a sense of calm as they freely toss items in. This calm is quickly replaced by shock as it overfills and spills out faster than anticipated, nudging the user into organizing their belongings. Toss has satellite compartments that vary in sizes and depths, all to acocunt for different items that may be tossed in, from loose change to small bottles of hygiene products or school supplies.
